One thing the spec list will not tell you, though: those colors are the standard ones, not the only ones. Clouds come in white, and the name and stars come in beige, because that combination sits quietly in almost any room and stops competing with the rest of the wall. But none of it is fixed. That is the convention, and you will see it everywhere, including in a few corners of our own shop where old labels have not been cleaned up yet. I am not going to pretend otherwise.

But it is a habit, not a rule. Beige boucle letters have no opinion about your baby. Cursive is not female and capitals are not male, and the only reason the category got sorted that way is that somebody had to sort it somehow and pink and blue were already taken.

Use gender as a tiebreaker if you like it, that is genuinely fine. Just do not let it be the whole decision, because the three things above will serve you better and one of them still matters when your kid is four.
