Every shape is cut by hand, sewn closed by hand, given its face by hand, and strung onto a wooden ring by hand. Nothing is stamped out by the thousand. And because a person is making it rather than a machine, you can change it: the color, the size, sometimes the design itself. A factory cannot do that for one customer, and it never will.

What makes a crib mobile handmade?
"Handmade" has been stretched until it means almost nothing. Plenty of listings use it to mean that a person stood near a machine at some point. It is the same trick as "calming for baby" on a night light box, which we picked apart in what actually makes a good nursery night light: decor language dressed up as a specification. So here is the honest line between the two, using our own process as the example.
A mass-produced mobile is assembled. Shapes are die-cut or molded in identical runs, faces are printed on, parts are glued, and the whole thing is boxed months before you see it. Speed is the goal, and every design decision serves it.
A handmade crib mobile is built. A pattern gets traced onto felt or boucle. Each shape is cut with scissors, sewn closed, filled, and given its face by hand. Wooden beads go onto cotton string one at a time. Each piece is hung at its own height and then adjusted, because a mobile that is not balanced turns badly, and no machine notices that.
This is why no two are identical. Our boucle sheep do not have matching ears. I stopped apologizing for that years ago, because it is not a flaw in the process, it is the process. If you want two objects that are perfectly identical, a factory is genuinely better at that than I will ever be.

There is a fair objection here, and I would rather say it than pretend it away: a baby cannot tell the difference. That is true. A newborn is not evaluating craftsmanship. But the mobile is not really an object for the baby, it is an object for the room, and for you, standing in that room at 3 AM for months. That is who notices.

What are felt and boucle baby mobiles made of?
This is where a lot of handmade listings get vague, so here is ours in full.

We work with a premium eco-friendly felt rather than the cheapest sheet available, because it is soft, lightweight, and holds its shape beautifully, which is exactly what a mobile hanging in still air needs to do. Felt that sags or pills looks tired within a month. The wood is real wood. The string is cotton. The beads are not painted plastic pretending.

Can you customize a handmade crib mobile?
Yes, and this is the part a factory cannot answer at all.
Every mobile we make has a custom option built into the listing. You can change the color, and for most designs you can ask about size or a new arrangement of the pieces. On our felt mobiles, custom coloring adds roughly $6 to $11 depending on the design. The Green Leaves mobile is $50.40 as shown and $58.50 in your colors. Ask a factory for a mobile in one specific shade of sage to match one specific nursery wall, and the answer is no, because retooling a production run for one customer is not a thing that happens. Ask us, and the answer is a question back: which sage? There is no run to retool. There is a pattern, a pair of scissors, and a color.

Is a handmade crib mobile safe above the crib?
Our mobiles are nursery decoration, not toys, and they are designed for nursery use when installed and used as directed. Two rules matter more than everything else on this page.
Hang it where your baby can see it but not reach it. Roughly 30 to 40 cm above the mattress surface with your baby lying down is the usual working distance. Check it again whenever the mattress height changes.
Take it down at the right moment, not at the convenient one. Remove any mobile from above the crib once your baby can push up on hands and knees, or by 5 months, whichever comes first. This is not our house rule, it is standard pediatric guidance: Nemours KidsHealth states it exactly that way, and Kaiser Permanente explains why: mobiles become a strangulation hazard for a child who can get up on hands and knees.
The 5 month rule, in one line
Remove the mobile from above the crib when your baby can push up on hands and knees, or by 5 months old, whichever comes first. Then hang it on the wall or from the ceiling, out of reach, where it keeps doing its job in the room.
That last part is worth saying out loud, because parents assume the mobile's life ends at 5 months. It does not. Ours are built as objects, so they move to a wall hook, a shelf corner, or a ceiling hook away from the crib and stay in the room for years.
A crib arm is not included with our mobiles, because plenty of nurseries hang theirs from the ceiling and would never use one. Most of ours are made after you order, which takes 1 to 3 business days before they ship, and those go out from Ukraine. Anything custom is always made this way, because your colors do not sit on a shelf anywhere waiting for you.
There is one honest exception. We keep a small number of our most popular designs ready at a warehouse in Florida, so customers in the United States can have one in 3 to 5 business days instead of waiting on international post. Baby showers have dates on them, and a mobile that arrives the week after is not a gift, it is an apology. Those pieces are sewn by the same hands, in the same way, just slightly ahead of you asking for them.
